President Dr. Abdelhafid

President Abedelhafid Djemil, Ph.D

April 15, 2015 - Letter from Majlis Ashura’s President Dr. Abdelhafid DJemil to the Muslim Community

April 15, 2015    Jumada A-Akhira 26, 1436

Dear Imams, Community Leaders, Brothers and Sisters, Muslim New Yorkers:

Assalamu Alaykum wa Rahmatul Allah wa Barakatuh. Praise to Allah the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. I bear witness that there is no god except Allah, and I bear witness that Mohammed is His servant and Messenger.

I have the honor to be the President of the Majlis Ash-Shura. In this context, I serve the Muslim community and the general society. It is the plan of Allah Subahanahu Wa Ta’ala that we gather from different places and diverse ethnicities in New York to work together. Each of us has a role in the betterment of the society, and each is to fulfill that role.

Majlis Ash-Shura is the oldest Muslim umbrella organization of Masjids in New York City. It has been representing the Muslim community and leading the struggle for the religious and civil rights since 1989. The Majlis has become the main voice of the Muslim community in New York with its diverse membership of Masjids, organizations, and institutions. Read more

MUSLIM SCHOOL HOLIDAYS Announcement 1MUSLIM SCHOOL HOLIDAYS Announcement 2MUSLIM SCHOOL HOLIDAYS Announcement 3 March 5, 2015 -Majlis Ash-Shura: Statement on Mayor de Blasio’s Historic Announcement about Muslim Holidays for NYC Public Schools

The Islamic Leadership Council (Majlis Ash-shura) of Metropolitan New York thanks (almighty God) Allah for this latest affirmation of the will and hope of Muslim New Yorkers, who continue during difficult times to claim our place in American Society, by demanding equal rights and recognition for our faith community. Twenty two years ago Mayor David Dinkins backed by the city council of that time, signed into law an amendment adding the Muslim holiday days of Eidul-fitr and Eid-Adha to those Christian and Jewish holy days upon which alternate side parking is suspended. This was the first step in a quest for inclusion on an even more important level, and the Majlis Ash-shura worked hard to make the dream a reality. The continued commitment of the office of the mayor, and the city council of this time to an equitable inclusive society, is now evidenced anew by the establishment of days of observation for the same two Muslim holy days on the New York City Department of Education calendar. Our Children and all New Yorkers are the victors in this long struggle. We are grateful for all who worked with us in producing a more fair and equitable society for us all to live in as diverse neighbors.

Islamic State ArrestFebruary 27, 2015 –  Majlis AshShura (Islamic Leadership Council) of Metropolitan New York: Statement on Arrest in NYC of Three Suspects Charged with Support for Terrorism:

In light of the announcement made yesterday regarding the arrest of three young Muslims charged with attempt and conspiracy to provide material support for ISIL, and today’s 22nd memorial anniversary of the bombing of the World Trade Center, the Majlis Ash-Shura (Islamic Leadership Council) re-affirms our  commitment to public safety for all New Yorkers.

At the same time we remind all that in America there is a presumption of innocence until proved guilty for all people charged with crimes.  In the past informants have been used by law enforcement agencies on both the city and federal level to entrap vulnerable individuals from the Muslim community. Read more.

February 27, 2015 - Why Does the FBI Have to Manufacture Its Own Plots if Terrorism and ISIS Are Such Grave Threats?

The FBI and major media outlets yesterday trumpeted the agency’s latest counter-terrorism triumph: the arrest of three Brooklyn men, ages 19 to 30, on charges of conspiring to travel to Syria to fight for ISIS (photo of joint FBI/NYPD press conference, above). As my colleague Murtaza Hussain ably documents, “it appears that none of the three men was in any condition to travel or support the Islamic State, without help from the FBI informant.” One of the frightening terrorist villains told the FBI informant that, beyond having no money, he had encountered a significant problem in following through on the FBI’s plot: his mom had taken away his passport. Noting the bizarre and unhinged ranting of one of the suspects, Hussain noted on Twitter that this case “sounds like another victory for the FBI over the mentally ill.” Read more.

February 11, 2015 –  Majlis Ash Shura Statement on Chapel Hill Murder of Three Muslim Americans

The Majlis Ash-Shura (Islamic Leadership Council) of Metropolitan New York and its member mosques and nonprofit organizations across New York City, Upper New York, and Long Island is shocked and deeply saddened by the cold-blooded killings of three young American Muslim college students in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. According to reports, the three college students were shot execution style by a self-proclaimed Atheist in their home.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families of the innocent victims of this tragedy. Read more.

Here is the transcript of President Obama’s remarks at the Breakfast: http://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/2015/02/05/remarks-president-national-prayer-breakfast

The Islamic Leadership Council (Majlis Ash-Shura) of Metropolitan New York continues to  denounce acts of extremist violence as contrary to both the universal principle of justice, and the  canonical law of Islam, sharia  law. As  Muslim leaders in New York City ,  we continue to  denounce all acts of political violence committed by extremist individuals, groups or governments, regardless of the color of their skin, country of their origin, religion or lack thereof, or their politics.  We do not condone the taking of innocent life. Neither do we condone mocking or lampooning the prophets of the world’s sacred religious and spiritual traditions, under the guise of freedom of expression. Media reports now indicate that the alleged culpable gunmen in the Hebdo and related killings have themselves been killed. We note that the victims of the massacre include journalists, hostages ,and a Muslim police officer simply doing his job of safeguarding the public.  As always, we extend our condolences to the families of all victims of mindless violence, and pray for the comfort of those same grieving families. All life is sacred.

Ash Shura at Million March 12 13 14 Against Police Racial Killings 21-December 07, 2014- ISLAMIC LEADERSHIP COUNCIL OF METROPOLITAN NEWK: CONTINUES TO STAND FOR JUSTICE A statement about racial killings across the nation.

Greetings of Peace: During this critical moment in American history, while many thousands of people are protesting in the streets of the nation’s towns and cities, from Ferguson, Missouri to the five boroughs of New York City, The Majlis Ash-Shura (Islamic Leadership Council) of Metropolitan New York, stands in solidarity with all people calling, demanding, and acting as one community in pursuit of justice. As Muslims we believe that the pursuit of justice is prophetic. The classical scholars of Al-Islam have taught us that the prophets were sent for the establishment of justice. The Qur’an chronicles their struggle to do so. Therefore as a manifestation of our commitment to justice, we of the Majlis stand with those persons demanding an end to institutional racism, and the elimination of racial, ethnic and class discrimination in our society, both within and without the Muslim community. Read more.
