Chaplaincy Certification Program

The Majlis ash-Shura (Islamic Leadership Council) of New York is a state-wide certifying body for chaplains serving public institutions, including hospitals and “correctional facilities.”

Our roots go back to the work of historically African-American Muslim institutions such as the Muslim Prison Committee (Yasin Mosque, Brooklyn) and the Muslim Prison Services Department (Mosque of Islamic Brotherhood, Harlem), which developed full-time chaplaincy programs to serve the needs of Muslim prisoners within the New York State Department of Corrections from the 1960s to the late ’80s.

The Majlis ash-Shura of New York, which includes these same congregations, is the Islamic “ecclesiastical body” that now “ordains” and endorses prospective Muslim chaplains based upon the standards of our faith. Our standards are comparable with the Archdiocese of New York, the New York Board of Rabbis, and the Council of Churches.

Please e-mail shuranewyork@gmail.com with inquiries related to hiring or serving as a Muslim chaplain.
